Konzelmann Estate Winery

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

Konzelmann Estate Winery, Niagara’s only lakefront producer located in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, selected VTScada by Trihedral to enhance visibility, control, and reliability across its vineyard and production operations. The system supports Konzelmann’s commitment to producing high-quality cool‑climate wines while maintaining consistency, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.

VTScada Capabilities Implemented

VTScada enables Konzelmann to:

  • Monitor and control critical systems in real time, including irrigation, fermentation processes, and temperature regulation, through a highly intuitive HMI interface.
  • Leverage the built‑in historian for secure data logging and trend analysis, supporting continuous process improvement, traceability, and audit readiness.
  • Utilize alarm management and notifications to receive proactive alerts via email, SMS, or text‑to‑speech for temperature deviations, equipment status, or process anomalies.

Why VTScada Matters for Konzelmann

Konzelmann Estate Winery is renowned for varietals such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Vidal Icewine, as well as its strong visitor‑focused experience with lakefront tastings and tours. Implementing VTScada:

  • Improves precision and consistency over fermentation and storage conditions.
  • Provides actionable, data‑driven insights into production quality and yield.
  • Enhances the reliability of environmental and process controls critical to wine quality

Educational Roots and System Evolution

The VTScada Educational Package played a key role in the early stages of this project. Konzelmann’s maintenance manager Matt, completed an Instrumentation Engineering Technician program at Mohawk College, where VTScada was used as part of the curriculum. Through this hands‑on training, Matt became proficient with the platform and recognized its strengths for industrial automation and process monitoring.

Matt initially configured the winery application using VTScadaLIGHT, which allowed him to rapidly stand up the core functionality and validate the overall approach. As the scope expanded, it quickly became clear that a full VTScada system was required to support advanced historian functionality, robust alarming, scalability, and long‑term operational needs.

My exposure to VTScada through Mohawk College made it an easy choice for this project,” said Matt Bering. “I was able to stand up a functional system very quickly using VTScadaLIGHT, but as soon as we saw the value of the data and alarm capabilities, it was obvious we needed the full platform. VTScada gives us the flexibility, reliability, and insight we need to support both production and future growth at Konzelmann.”

The combination of VTScada’s proven strengths in food and beverage automation and Konzelmann’s forward‑thinking approach positions the winery for enhanced operational oversight, improved consistency, and long‑term scalability.
