Abstract: Case Study: Solving Algae Blooms And H2s Emissions With A Well-Planned Lagoon Sludge Cleanout
Day 2: December 8, 2021 at 11:42 AM AT
Sludge accumulation was thought to be causing significant operational challenges for the O”Leary WWTF, a two-cell lagoon system on the west side of Prince Edward Island. The lagoons were experiencing serious blooms of blue-green algae during the summer months and occasional exceedances of TSS, BOD and coliform bacteria in treated effluent.
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas, which was also attributed to the algae and sludge, was building up in a below-grade chamber that housed the plant’s UV disinfection system. Not only was the gas accumulation a hazard for operators, but it caused corrosion that damaged ductile iron pipes, an electrical panel and the plant’s UV system. Operators also saw “islands of sludge” periodically rise out of the water before bursting and releasing clouds of methane and H2S gases.
This presentation will take a closer look at the evaluation, selection and implementation of a sludge removal and dewatering process to solve the operational challenges at the O’Leary WWTF.
- The importance of a comprehensive sludge survey to the quantify sludge accumulation, assess the impact on plant performance and inform the remediation approach.
- Sludge removal with the Bishop Solids Management Solution – a simple, low-energy process to dredge, collect and dewater the sludge. Dredging enabled the lagoon to remain in operation and complied with a provincial regulation that prohibits heavy equipment from operating in lagoons with clay liners.
- The benefits of passive onsite dewatering and containment with Geotube geotextile containers. The Bishop Solids Management Solution accepts and dewaters solids as quickly as the dredge can pump and solids can remain onsite for an extended period. Hauling costs can be deferred to a future budgetary period and ample time is available to find a site for land application.
About Paul Saulnier, Technical Sales Manager:
Paul Saulnier has been involved in the water and wastewater industry for the last 18 years. He started his career in pump sales and has expanded his knowledge to many other areas within the water and waste water treatment industry.
Paul joined Scotia Tech Fluid Services 13 years ago and, in conjunction with Bishop Water Technologies, has worked to expand awareness and adoption of simple, low-energy wastewater solutions throughout the Atlantic Provinces. These include the Bishop Solids Management Solution with Geotube technology, BioCord Reactors for cold-weather ammonia removal and ClariPhos Rare Earth Coagulant for superior phosphorus removal. Having commissioned many dewatering sites in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and PEI he has helped communities deal with sludge dewatering issues in a safe, simple way that saves energy and reduces costs.
