Sacramento Approves Major Expansion to Successful VTScada Installation

Initiates Sole Source Contract with Trihedral for Software, Training, and Support

SacramentoExpansionOn December 15, 2015, the City Council of Sacramento, California, passed a resolution to execute a Professional Services Agreement with Trihedral, the developers of VTScada software, to expand their existing SCADA licensing to accommodate 500,000 data points, as well as provide additional software licenses, thin clients, training, and support.

Building on Success
In 2012, Sacramento’s Department of Utilities (DOU) completed the first phase of their Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Software Replacement Project which replaced their legacy GE Fix32 (SCADA) software with Trihedral’s VTScada platform. The 111,475 tag application provided monitoring and control for distributed water, wastewater, collections, and distribution infrastructure.

A report to City Council by the Sacramento DOU cites the success of this system when recommending its expansion. “DOU has been very pleased with the performance of the VTS* system and Trihedral, Inc., and is requesting the purchase of software upgrades, licenses, training, and support, in order to meet significantly increased need for controls and data acquisition from the SCADA system.”

Meeting the Needs of a Growing City
The report details the expanded application: “The Water Treatment Plant (WTP) Rehabilitation project (Z14006000) has substantially increased the number of data points required for local and remote monitoring of the SCADA system and increased the number of licenses needed to allow Plant operators access to the SCADA system. The recent opening of the DOU’s Department Operations Center (DOC) has also increased the need for VTScada software licensing and support. Additional licenses are needed at DOU facilities throughout the City for remote access to the SCADA system. Training and support assistance is needed to ensure that the software upgrade is successful.”

Department Operations Center (DOC) – Facilitating Emergency Response
From the report: “The DOC provides a centralized location for DOU staff security, communications, and facility operations monitoring during emergency events. As part of the DOC operations, DOU staff monitors the SCADA system during events using one VTS internet client license. To accommodate higher SCADA use during DOC events, DOU is requesting one additional VTS Thin Client license at this location.”SacramentoDeptofUtilitiesCA_FairbairnWTPAlumTanksAndPumps

Expanded Remote Access
VTScada Thin Clients (also known as Internet clients) allow authorized users to monitor and control their systems from networked computers or HTML5-compliant mobile devices that do not have VTScada installed. In addition to the new Thin Client for the DOC, the report recommends ten additional Thin Clients for various DOU facilities throughout the City.

Training and Support
Trihedral will provide up to three weeks of training and support for the software upgrade and additional licenses through June 30, 2016.
