Honouring the Canadian Coast Guard

Critical Marine Systems

This Earth Month, we celebrate a partnership built for endurance; one that supports environmental stewardship, search and rescue, and safe navigation in some of the harshest waters on the planet.

The Canadian Coast Guard has safeguarded Canada’s coastlines, ensuring year-round marine access through icebreaking operations, responding to emergencies at sea, and protecting fragile marine ecosystems. VTScada is proud to be a long‑standing technology partner in this mission, providing reliable monitoring and control systems that keep Coast Guard vessels operational when conditions are at their most unforgiving.

Since 1994, aboard Canadian Coast Guard ships, VTScada delivers robust, mission‑critical visibility into essential systems, including:

  • Engine room monitoring and alarming
  • Tank level monitoring and gauging
  • Power management systems
  • Crane and deck machinery controls

These capabilities are vital during icebreaking and rescue operations, where vessel reliability directly supports environmental protection, crew safety, and timely response to incidents in remote and sensitive waters.

As part of the Coast Guard’s ongoing modernization efforts, VTScada integrates seamlessly with existing PLCs and RTUs, extending the life of proven infrastructure while enhancing software performance and insight. Broad protocol support and historical data import make VTScada ideally suited for migrating from legacy systems without disruption. This approach reflects a shared commitment to sustainability: maximizing the value of existing assets while enabling smarter, more efficient operations.

This enduring deployment is a testament to VTScada’s adaptability and reliability in punishing marine environments—and to a partnership defined by trust, longevity, and shared purpose.

Ship In Focus: CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier

The Sir Wilfrid Laurier exemplifies how modern technology supports both operational excellence and environmental responsibility. System Highlights:

  • Comprehensive monitoring and control for onboard Power Management and Alarm Systems
  • Over 12,000 I/O tags across both systems, logging at 100 ms to 500 ms intervals
  • 19 installed VTScada workstations with wireless thin‑client access
  • First Canadian Coast Guard vessel to integrate renewable fuel tracking into the tank monitoring system
  • Advanced fuel transfer pages with Delta V trending for precise flow‑rate monitoring
  • GPS time synchronization across all networked devices
  • Continuous logging of harmonic content from the fundamental through the 50th harmonic, including all inter‑harmonics

A Partnership That Endures

From ice‑covered shipping lanes to complex rescue missions, the Canadian Coast Guard relies on systems that perform without compromise. VTScada’s long history aboard Coast Guard vessels reflects more than technical capability, it represents a shared commitment to resilience, environmental responsibility, and protecting Canada’s waters for generations to come.

This Earth Month, we are honoured to recognize the Canadian Coast Guard with the VTScada Legend Award and to celebrate a partnership built to last.
