New Glasgow High School Student Awarded Annual Robert Spencer Memorial Bursary

“My name is Annie Li and I believe that true success is only achieved when you have tackled your goal while also remaining content and enjoying every bit of your path towards your objective.”

So begins the winning application for the second annual Robert Spencer Memorial Bursary by Annie Li of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.

Though Rob never received a scholarship himself, he was a highly intelligent man who pursued knowledge out of genuine curiosity and child-like wonder. He loved to share his passion for learning and believed that ‘success’ was measured by qualities such as creativity, humor and a genuine interest in other people. After Rob passed away in July of 2012, his family decided to continue his spirit of generosity through the creation of this bursary.

In her application, Annie described many ways in which she shared Rob’s view of life. For example, in addition to enjoying her own journey, she also believes in doing what she can to help people and make the world a better place. “I’m involved with the Interact Club at my high school which provides aid to other countries that are struggling, yet also considers the well being of people and organizations in our community.”

Like Rob, Annie is not afraid to take a few risks. “My passion is always resided in horseback riding and I started the sport when I was 12. Being ambitious, I decided to take horseback jumping. The sport can be dangerous but the connection between human and the horse is so powerful that I am never apprehensive while taking a leap over a jump.”

Rob loved astronomy so much he constructed his own telescope. Annie is also fascinated by the night sky. “One of my many interests is our galaxy. Millions upon millions of galaxies reside in our ever-growing universe and no one has ever explored them all. Curiosity remains in my mind about how our universe began and what generated the evolution of what is known to be as the earth today.”

Annie’s future plans include attending university where she hopes to continue finding ways to help people. “My main ambition is to become an ophthalmologist so I can aid individuals to improve their vision or even discover a cure for blindness.”

All of us at Trihedral congratulate Annie and wish her joy and happiness on her journey to success.
